Register of prisoners, 1848-1938.

These were used to register prisoners and to record pertinent information about them. Early registers recorded the following information on each prisoner: name; crime; sentence; county; term of court; received date; sentence expiration date; age; education; place of birth; drinking habits; marital status; height; weight; complexion; eye and hair color; distinguishing marks; and discharge reason and date. In 1855, occupation information was added. Notations for gender and race were entered after 1865. Physical descriptions of prisoners were eliminated from these books around 1875 and a reference to a separate description book was added. Former convictions and religious habits were added at the same time and recorded for about twenty years. Although, previously, prisoners had received a committal number, by the turn of the century each prisoner was assigned a unique prisoner number. Three volumes (1909-1953) do not enter age, race or term of court.
